Sadiqa de Meijer is a very talented poet who needs to be more widely read. Her word choices are musical and her poetry is packed with a vitality that makes the book clever, or interesting, or moving, or lovely to listen to. The description of landscapes and relationships seem quite different to most poets I read because the poems have a sense of observer/outsider to them. I know she has Dutch parents so it is highly romantic of me to compare her to Vermeer, but I do have the sense sometimes of the glow that comes through in his work. The deft application of one or two words that gives the same effect as the lead bead Vermmer possibly used when making light sit on a pearl or a pitcher.I think she's terrific.

I received 'Leaving Howe Island' as a Goodreads giveaway, and as such I feel morally obligated to review. This is a book of poetry by Sadiqa de Meijer. To analyze and comment intelligently on her work requires someone more familiar with evaluating poetic efforts. I found many of her word images captivating and sensed a strong emotional involvement by the author in a number of the offerings. I am not a poet, however, and did not understand or relate to some of the verses. I sense this collection will appeal to a select group of readers with a greater understanding and appreciation of her poetry
